Worship Philosophy
Here at Grace, want to emphasize that “worship” is not simply the act of singing a musical tune. Worship is not just an “event” or something we can relegate to a block of time on a Sunday morning. Worship is way of life and encompasses every aspect of who we are and what we do (Romans 12:1-2). One way we worship God is through the corporate singing of songs, hymns, and spiritual songs. While we offer a more classic worship style, we strive to be balanced by sing a mixture of both hymns and choruses. Our philosophy is to sing the very best of the old, and the very best of the new. The songs we sing are guided by three simple principles:
Is the Song Biblical? Do the lyrics of the song properly represent Scripture? It is important that our songs are theologically accurate and that they represent the truth about who man really is, who God is, and what the Bible actually teaches.
Is the Song Singable? Is the song able to be sung by the average person sitting in our services? There are many beautiful traditional and classical styles of worship music that are not easily sung by most people. Likewise, some modern praise choruses present similar problems for many people. While we do take some time to learn songs that are both old and new, we believe that church worship is meant to be a corporate event, and not merely for the select few who can sing the difficult songs.
Is the Song Worshipful? Is the song distinctly Christian in it’s presentation? We want to sing songs that direct our attention to our God and His character. As a principle, we desire to sing songs that draw our attention upwards, not outwards. Part of a worshipful music service is not being stuck in a rut, but growing in our love and knowledge of God by singing new, different, or unfamiliar songs. Christian maturity in worship can be demonstrated through learning to cultivate a deep passion for our God by using each song as a means to educate our minds about God, grow in our love for God, and express our emotions to God.
